The Dallas Cowboys have confirmed that they have signed defensive end Michael Sam to their practice squad.
Sam made history earlier this year when he became the first openly gay player in the NFL when he was selected by the St Louis Rams in the 2014 Draft.
However, the 24-year-old was released as part of their roster cutdown on Saturday and not signed to their practice squad, but has now been given the chance for Jason Garrett's men.
Sam wrote on Twitter: "As a kid growing up in Texas I always loved the Dallas Cowboys, so to join this incredible organisation is really a dream come true.
"I want to thank the Jones family, the entire Cowboys organisation, and the city of Dallas for giving me this opportunity.
"I look forward to putting my helmet and pads on every day to work my hardest to help bring a sixth Super Bowl Championship to Dallas!!"
The Cowboys open their 2014 campaign on Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers.
