Jim Caldwell: 'Detroit Lions will be a smart football team'

New Detroit Lions coach Jim Caldwell says that as of next season, his team will not be one who shoot themselves in the foot on a regular basis.

New Detroit Lions coach Jim Caldwell has stated that he believes he was brought to the franchise to win their first Super Bowl championship.

Caldwell left his position as offensive coordinator with the Baltimore Ravens to take up his new role, his first head coaching job since leading the Indianapolis Colts to the season finale in 2009.

In his first press conference as Lions coach, Caldwell laid down a marker of what he expects of his new team.

He said: "We're going to be smart. We're going to be a football team that takes the field, that's not going to shoot itself in the foot.

"Every single one of the players, to a man, is excited about the opportunity presented before us, and I think that without question they're willing to do whatever it takes to win. They believe, and I believe, the time is now. Not two years or three years from now, down the road somewhere, but right here, right now."

The Lions lost patience with former coach Jim Schwartz after his team imploded this season, going from a 6-3 start to ending with a 7-9 record and missing the post-season.
