Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles has outlined his ambition to win the offensive player of the year award in the 2014 campaign.

The 28-year-old is widely regarded as one of the best backs in the NFL, and came close to achieving his goal in the 2013 season when he accumulated 1,980 yards from scrimmage and 19 touchdowns, only to be beaten by Peyton Manning's record-breaking campaign.

Charles struggled for form in the 2014 season, but is now determined to get back to his best and win the award.

"I want to be [AFC] offensive player of the year," Charles told reporters. "That's always my goal, every year my goal. I want to come back to [Kansas City's annual] 101 Banquet for the Chiefs award.

"I want to come back as AFC player of the year. That's what I've been wanting to do. I think I almost got there. Peyton Manning had an awesome season [in 2013], and he beat me out."

Charles has been named as an All-Pro twice in his career, and has also been voted to the Pro Bowl four times.
