Adrian Peterson: 'I want to break Emmitt Smith's record'

Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson targets breaking Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith's all-time rushing yardage record before he calls time on his NFL career.

Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson has outlined his ambition to break the all-time rushing yardage record of Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith.

Peterson missed all but one game of the 2014 season after he was suspended by the NFL when he filed a no contest plea of causing reckless or negligent injury to his four-year-old son, but was later reinstated by the league after US District Court Judge David Doty overturned the decision.

However, now that the 30-year-old has returned to the league, he feels that he is more than capable of rushing for another 8,155 rushing yards to surpass Smith's record of 18,355 before he retires from the game.

"I don't think it's impossible," Peterson told the Pioneer Press. "A lot of things are still to come. I look at things that anything is possible. He played 15 years.

"I'm going into year nine but I've only got eight on the body. That's a long-term goal [to break the record]. I think I can play ]past Smith's retirement age of 35].

"I'm blessed with tremendous talent and recovery and everything, so I feel like I'll be able to play as long as I want. I want to play seven more [years]. Eight. I really feel that I can be 38 out there and still be the best running back in the NFL."

Peterson has also rushed for 86 touchdowns in his eight years in the NFL.
