The Oakland Raiders have signed free agent linebacker Aldon Smith to a one-year deal.
The 25-year-old was released by the San Francisco 49ers after he was arrested for the fourth time in four seasons with the club when he was charged with a DUI in August.
However, the Raiders have taken the decision to sign Smith to their roster ahead of their 2015 season opener, despite concerns over his off-the-field behaviour.
"We're very thorough in what we do and how we do it, so we feel very confident about the addition and about our football team going forward," head coach Jack Del Rio told reporters.
Smith has recorded 152 tackles, 44 sacks and one interception in his four seasons in the NFL.
