Former St Louis Rams head coach Mike Martz admits that he was taken aback when he saw the statement he provided to the NFL amid the spygate scandal.

Former St Louis Rams head coach Mike Martz has revealed that he was shocked to see embellishments in a statement he made to the NFL in the aftermath of the spygate scandal.

The New England Patriots were accused by the Boston Herald of taping the walkthrough of the St Louis Rams ahead of their clash in Super Bowl XXXVI following the spygate scandal, after which the club were heavily fined and docked their first-round pick in the 2008 Draft.

The allegations were proven to be false and the Herald printed a full apology to the club on the front and back pages of the publication. However, the Rams asked for an investigation to be carried out by the NFL- the body obliged and found no wrongdoing.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell then allegedly persuaded Martz to release a statement, declaring that he was satisfied by the league's examination of the incident.

However, Martz has admitted that he was surprised to see the quotes in his apparent statement.

"It shocked me," Martz told ESPN. "It appears embellished quite a bit — some lines I know I didn't write. Who changed it? I don't know."

The report by ESPN also claims that the Carolina Panthers were convinced that the Patriots had taped their practices ahead of Super Bowl XXXVIII
