Scotland's Jake Wightman was forced to settle for the bronze medal in the men's 1500m final at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The 28-year-old had become world champion only a few weeks before competing in Birmingham but was unable to replicate his success in Eugene with a late charge.

Wightman ultimately ran out of energy in the closing stages and finished with 3:30.53 on the clock to place third – four years after taking the bronze medal in the same event on the Gold Coast.

Personal bests were smashed all around in the 1500m, as the gold medal went to Oliver Hoare of Australia with a Games record of 3:30.12.

"Mentally it was hard to get back up for this. It wasn't even the pressure it was just the mental fatigue of having had such a high, to come back up and get on it soon again after," Wightman told BBC Sport.

"I could have easily bombed that and not done even anything. For me I've done something so good this season, everything else is a bonus. I gave it a go to win it, but I didn't have it. I'm just relieved to get something for Scotland because one of us deserved to be on the podium and I'm lucky to be the one to be on it."

Kenya's Timothy Cheruiyot achieved a season's best time of 3:30.21 to win the silver medal in a highly competitive race, and Wightman was the only athlete in the top 11 not to set a new personal best.

Jake Heyward placed fifth for Wales with a time of 3:31.08, as England duo Matthew Stonier and Elliot Giles placed seventh and ninth respectively. body check tags ::
