Scotland's Laura Muir storms to 1500m gold at Commonwealth Games

Scotland's Laura Muir followed up her 1500m bronze medal in the World Athletics Championships by taking the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

The 29-year-old barely had 24 hours to recover from placing third in the 800m final but timed her attack to perfection to win 1500m gold in 4:02.75.

Northern Ireland's Ciara Mageean did her best to keep up with Muir, but it was a futile endeavour, as the world bronze medallist got onto the podium for the second time this month.

"I just thought my strength is in my kick. I tried to trust it and hoped no-one caught me. I was tying up at the end and I ran as hard as I could for the line," Muir told BBC Sport.

"You learn from it and your time will come. It sounds cheesy but it's true. Eight years of Commonwealths and it's been bugging me so this means a lot."

After her successes at the Worlds and Commonwealths, Muir will now turn her attention to the upcoming European Championships, which take place in Munich from August 15 to 21.

"Doing the 800m/1500m double - nothing easy about that. Two down one to go, I can't thank everyone enough. Everyone has been amazing I couldn't have asked for a better support crew," Muir added.

Mageean's 4:04.14 was good enough for silver, while Abbey Caldwell of Australia finished with 4:04.79 on the clock to win bronze. England's Katie Snowden (4:07.15) ended up in seventh. body check tags ::
