Chris Rogers: 'Australia must dig deep to overcome England'

Chris Rogers acknowledges that "it is going to be hard work" for Australia to successfully overcome England in the first Ashes Test in Cardiff.

Chris Rogers has conceded that England are "in a happier position" than Australia heading into the third day of play in the opening Ashes Test.

Having bowled the Three Lions all out for 430 in Thursday's first session, the tourists reached lunch with all their wickets still intact.

David Warner (17) and Steven Smith (33) both fell before tea, however, while Adam Voges was dismissed late on in Cardiff to leave the Baggy Greens on 264-5 - 166 runs behind their opponents.

Rogers, who top-scored for his side with 95, now wants to see his teammates up things on day three at the SWALEC Stadium.

"It's a question of personal pride, and for us to get out the way we did, it's going to hurt - particularly when there was an opportunity to make it count," he is quoted as saying by the Daily Mail.

"I got a 90 and there were a few 30s. That will hurt us. We're better than that. They're probably in a happier position at the moment.

"I think the wicket may deteriorate, so it's going to be hard work at the back end. We can't really concede a big deficit, otherwise it'll be an uphill battle for us."

Shane Watson (29*) and Nathan Lyon (6*) will get things underway at the crease for Australia at 11am on Friday morning.
