Australia extend their lead over India to 326 runs after ending day four of the third Test in Melbourne on 261-7.

Australia have extended their lead over India to 326 runs after ending a rain-affected day four of the third Test in Melbourne with three wickets remaining.

After dismissing India for 465 in the morning session, the hosts looked for quick runs as David Warner (40) and Chris Rogers stormed to a combined 57 before the former was sent back to the pavilion by Ravichandran Ashwin's delivery.

Rogers top-scored with the bat on day four after hitting 69 off 123 balls before getting bowled out by Ashwin in the afternoon session.

After tea, India found their fifth wicket when Joe Burns (9) was caught out by MS Dhoni following Ishant Sharma's delivery.

India struggled to gain momentum after finding the breakthrough, but shortly after Australia reached the 200-run mark, Umesh Yadav dismissed Brad Haddin for 13.

It was a disappointing start for Mohammed Shami as the 24-year-old was close to ending day four without a wicket to his name, but he managed to get on the board before stumps by taking out Mitchell Johnson for 15.

Shaun Marsh (62 not out) and Ryan Harris (8 not out) will return to the crease for Australia, who are currently 2-0 up in the four-Test series, for the fifth and final day.
