Joe Burns and Steve Smith both score centuries as the Australians gain control of the second Test against New Zealand.

Centuries from Joe Burns and skipper Steve Smith have given Australia the upper hand on day two of the second Test against New Zealand in Christchurch.

Following an opening day that was dominated by a record-breaking ton from retiring Kiwi Brendon McCullum, the tourists returned to the crease today on 57-1.

They lost Usman Khawaja (24) to the bowling of Trent Boult in just the fourth over, which brought Burns and Smith together.

The duo stood up against the New Zealand bowling attack, putting on a partnership of 289 runs before Burns was caught by Martin Guptill for 170. It was the 26-year-old's third Test century and his highest ever score.

Smith (138) followed him back to the pavilion soon after, leaving Adam Voges (2*) and Nathan Lyon (4*) to get the Aussies through to the close of play on 363-4 - seven runs adrift of New Zealand's total.
