England reach 289-7 at the end of the first day of the second Ashes Test match at Lord's.

England have reached 289-7 at the end of the first day of the second Ashes Test match at Lord's.

A century from Ian Bell, his second ton of the series, helped Alastair Cook's side to recover from a slow start.

England, who won the toss and chose to bat, were reduced to 28-3 inside the first six overs as Cook (12) was caught lbw off Shane Watson before Joe Root (6) and Kevin Pietersen (2) were dismissed by Ryan Harris.

Bell and Jonathan Trott regrouped to take the hosts to 80-3 at lunch, but Trott went for 58 after the restart when he was caught by Usman Khawaja off the bowling of Harris.

Jonny Bairstow was bowled by Peter Siddle off a no-ball while on 21 and he was recalled to the crease after replays showed that the bowler had overstepped.

Bell (109) claimed his third century in as many Ashes Tests before being caught by Michael Clarke off the bowling of Steve Smith, which brought Bell's partnership of 144 with Bairstow to an end.

Smith claimed another two wickets in quick succession as Bairstow (67) chipped the ball straight back to him for a simple catch before Matt Prior (6) was caught behind by Brad Haddin.

Prior was the final wicket of the day to fall as Tim Bresnan (7) and James Anderson (4) ended at the crease.
