Australia reach stumps on day one of the second Test with England on 209-4 after the tourists endured a testing day in the field in Adelaide.

Australia have ended day one of the second Test with England on 209-4, helped by a half-century from Usman Khawaja.

After losing the opening Test in Brisbane, England began the day-night affair in Adelaide by winning the toss but Joe Root's men toiled in the field against their hosts.

Cameron Bancroft (10) was run out by Chris Woakes to give England the breakthrough at 33-1, but David Warner and Khawaja kicked on to take Australia to 83-2, with Woakes having Warner caught behind for 47.

Australia reached tea on 138-2 but James Anderson struck four balls after the dinner break to remove Khawaja for 53, and it gave England renewed hope for the remainder of the day.

A glut of wickets did not materialise, but Craig Overton picked up his first Test wicket on debut to grab the potentially-crucial wicket of Steven Smith for 40.

Peter Handscomb (36*) and Shaun Marsh (20*) saw out the 18.5 overs which were left in the day to leave their side in the ascendancy, but England will take confidence from preventing Australia from running away with the opening day, which was nine overs short due to rain.
