Alastair Cook: 'England made to pay by Pakistan in first Test'

Alastair Cook admits that England "paid the price" for their negative display during the first innings of their first Test with Pakistan, which ended in a 75-run defeat.

England skipper Alastair Cook has lamented his side's poor showing in the first innings against Pakistan which he admits cost his side in the opening Test.

The hosts gave themselves hope of winning after some positive play by Jonny Bairstow (48), Gary Ballance (43) and James Vince (42), but the 283-run margin proved too much in the end during Sunday's final session.

Pakistan spinner Yasir Shah claimed 10 wickets of his own to help the Green Shirts to a 75-run victory at Lord's that had been on the cards since taking control after the first innings.

"That 75-run margin is the first innings," Cook told BBC Sport. "We left a few out there when the pitch was best to bat on. We paid the price for that. We were always slightly behind. I thought we were okay on the first day, then Yasir getting six wickets hurt us."

The second Test of the series gets underway at Old Trafford next Thursday.
