Former England captain Eoin Morgan has announced his retirement from cricket at the age of 36.

After initially representing Ireland at the start of his international career, Morgan switched nations and proceeded to establish himself as a legendary figure in English cricket.

Morgan amassed 225 one-day internationals, 28 more than anyone else, and 115 outings in T20 internationals, remaining 12 ahead of current skipper Jos Buttler at the top of those listings.

However, Morgan departs the sport as England's only successful captain in the 50-over World Cup, spearheading their efforts in the 2019 tournament which ended with a super-over triumph over New Zealand in the final.

Although Morgan scored fewer runs in the competition than several of his teammates, he hit a remarkable 22 sixes, 10 more than anyone else in the team.

In a statement, the 36-year-old said: "It is with great pride that I am announcing my retirement from all forms of cricket.

"After much deliberation, I believe that now is the right time to step away from the game that has given me so much over the years. From moving to England in 2005 to join Middlesex right up to the very end, playing for Paarl Royals in SA20, I have cherished every moment.

"As there are in every sportsperson's career, there have been highs and lows but my family and friends have been my side throughout.

"I also must thank all my teammates, coaches, fans and those behind the scenes who not only made me the player I became but have also made me the man I am today."

Throughout his career, Morgan represented Middlesex, but he also played limited-overs and franchise cricket for 11 different teams, including London Spirit during the recently-formed Hundred tournament. body check tags ::
