India have edged the first day of the second Test against England, Yashasvi Jaiswal producing a majestic 179 to guide his side to 336-6 at stumps.

With England having prevailed in a thrilling first Test, India went into the second instalment in Visakhapatnam needing a response, and winning the toss on Friday morning could prove pivotal.

Nevertheless, the friendlier batting conditions in comparison to the pitch in Hyderabad should not take anything away from Jaiswal as he further enhanced his reputation as one of the best young cricketers on the planet.

Full of confidence after his 80 in the first innings of the opening Test, the 22-year-old batted out the day to make 179 from just 257 deliveries.

As wickets regularly fell around him, Jaiswal hit 17 fours and five maximums to keep India on top of England, who themselves can be satisfied with how they performed.

Aside from the brilliance of Jaiswal, no Indian batsmen scored more than 34, with youngster Shoaib Bashir taking 2-100 from 28 overs on his first day of Test cricket.

Rehan Ahmed made an impact late in the day to take the wickets of Rajat Patidar and Srikar Bharat, who made a quickfire 17 from 23 as India looked to blast their way to a big score during the closing hour.

Jaiswal is currently joined at the crease by Ravichandran Ashwin (5*) and the pair are tasked with trying to take India past the 400-mark as a bare minimum during the opening session on Saturday. body check tags ::
