South Africa end the first day of the second Test match with England at Trent Bridge on 309-6.

South Africa have seized the initiative at the close of play on the first day of the second Test with England after reaching 309-6 at Trent Bridge.

After winning the toss, the tourists soon lost Dean Elgar (6) off the bowling of James Anderson before Stuart Broad removed Heino Kuhn for 34.

However, a third-wicket partnership of 113 between Hashim Amla and Quinton de Kock soon got South Africa back on track, before Broad claimed his second wicket of the day to send De Kock (68) back to the pavilion.

Amla quickly followed for 74 and England managed to reduce their opponents to 235-6 with 23 overs of the day still remaining as Ben Stokes got in on the action.

Vernon Philander (54*) and Chris Morris (23*) saved their team, however, and put on an unbeaten stand of 74 to give the Proteas the share of the spoils ahead of day two.
