Stuart Broad prevents Tom Lathan and Luke Ronchi from reaching centuries to restrict New Zealand to 297-8 on the first day of the second Test at Headingley.

Stuart Broad picked up a couple of vital wickets before the close of play as England reduced New Zealand to 297-8 at stumps on the opening day of the second Test at Headingley.

It did not take long for England to pick up their first wicket of the session as Ben Stokes sent Brendan McCullum packing off the first ball following tea, while Mark Wood secured his first wicket of the innings by bowling BJ Watling for 14 shortly after.

Tom Latham and Luke Ronchi tried to steady the ship for the tourists, putting on over 100 for the sixth wicket, but Broad finally split the pairing when the opener edged a ball to Joe Root.

Ronchi could not reach his century either as Broad was among the wickets again when the debutant scooped the ball to James Anderson, leaving him with 88 off just 70 balls in his first Test innings.

Wood secured his second wicket of the evening shortly before stumps, restricting Tim Southee to just one run, but Mark Craig and Matt Henry both remained unbeaten after the final over of the day.
