England have a lof of work to do if they are going to avoid defeat against New Zealand in the first Test at Lord's, according to former Kiwi international Ian Smith.

Former New Zealand cricketer Ian Smith has hailed England's fighting spirit on day three of the first Test against the Kiwis at Lord's.

Alastair Cook and Ian Bell will resume tomorrow morning with England on 74-2, 60 runs short of the tourists.

The hosts lost both Adam Lyth and Gary Ballance early in their second innings, but Cook and Bell battled hard in the final hour to remain not out.

Smith told Sky Sports News: "England certainly have the bulk of the work still to do to get themselves out of this. But I admired the way they played and their experience has come to the fore in the way they played in difficult situations.

"It was a really engaging last two hours in particular and England should take a lot of heart from it. But still, they've got to play well for a lot of this match yet."

New Zealand were bowled out for 523 earlier in the day, which gave them a first-innings lead of 134.
