New Zealand defeat the West Indies in the Caribbean for only the second time in history.

New Zealand recorded a memorable victory over the West Indies today, defeating their opponents in the Caribbean for only the second time in history.

The Black Caps won the opening Test at Sabina Park by 186 runs, bowling out the Windies for 216 in 47.3 overs after setting the hosts 403 for victory.

New Zealand got off to the ideal start when Tim Southee took two wickets in as many overs after declaring at 156 for eight ahead of tea.

Spinner Mark Craig was the star of the show, chalking up 4-97 in the second innings, while teammate Ish Sodhi ended on 3-42.

Southee went on to dismiss openers Kieran Powell and Chris Gayle in consecutive overs, and Craig claimed the wicket of Kirk Edwards to leave the hosts at 30 for three.

Craig claimed his fourth wicket later on by catching out Kemar Roach behind for 19, and ended the match as the first New Zealander to take eight wickets on debut.

The Windies put up a fight later on, with their final pairing of Shane Shillingford and Sulieman Benn putting on 82 for the 10th wicket after a difficult ninth.

The result sees New Zealand take a 1-0 lead in the three-Test series, which resumes with the second Test in the Port of Spain on Tuesday.
