England cyclist Jason Kenny believes that his team made a "massive step forward" by winning a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games today.

Team England cyclist Jason Kenny has expressed his belief that the men's team sprint quartet have made a "massive step forward" during today's Commonwealth Games.

Kenny, Philip Hindes and Kian Emadi picked up a silver medal on the opening day of action at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome this evening, just five months after the same trio failed to make the final of the World Championships in Colombia.

Kenny, who won two gold medals at the 2012 London Olympics, acknowledged that the team had hit something of a lull since the Games, but is hopeful that their performance in Glasgow can help them push on to Rio in 2016.

"I think we're really happy, particularly with the first ride to get us into the final - that was a massive step forward. Technically they were two very good rides, which we've been struggling to do," he told reporters.

"Hopefully we can build on that and go fast and start pushing for the medals at the World Championships and the Olympics. I think it just takes a bit of time. Kian is new to the team, and he is joining a team that is getting a little bit slower.

"Coming off the Games we were in really good form, but we've had that lull so we're just taking a bit of time to get it together. It's all coming together now, hopefully we can just keep it going and concentrate on going fast."

Kenny also squeezed into the quarter-finals of the individual sprint event, where he will go head to head with Australia's much-fancied Matthew Glaetzer.
