British Cycling CEO Brian Facer is to step down from the job less than two years after his appointment in the wake of controversy surrounding a partnership with Shell.

British Cycling has announced that CEO Brian Facer will leave the role by mutual agreement after less than two years in the job.

Facer was instilled as CEO in January 2021 but has been caught up in a wave of controversies during his tenure at the top.

The governing body has come under serious backlash for partnering with oil giant Shell until 2030, with the eight-year agreement said to "help British Cycling accelerate its own journey to net zero and encourage more low- and zero-carbon forms of transport such as cycling and electric vehicles."

Several environmental groups have voiced opposition to British Cycling's eight-year agreement with Shell, and the organization was also forced to apologise after initially suggesting that people should not ride bikes on the day of Queen Elizabeth II's funeral.

In a statement to britishcycling.co.uk, chair Frank Slevin said: "We remain fully committed to the delivery of our 'Lead our sport, inspire our communities' strategy, as we continue our work to support and grow our sport and wider activities, and provide our Great Britain Cycling Team riders with the best possible platform for success.

"Our new CEO will join the organisation at an exciting time as we build towards next year's inaugural UCI Cycling World Championships in Scotland, and the Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2024."

Cycling Delivery Director Danielle Every will act as interim CEO until a permanent successor to Facer is found. body check tags ::
