Italy's Filippo Ganna wrote himself into another chapter of the history books by setting a new world record to win the men's individual pursuit race at the Track World Championships.

The 26-year-old only broke the hour world record in Switzerland last week, registering a distance of 56.792km, and he posted a quickest-ever time for individual pursuit gold in Saint-Quentin en Yvelines.

Facing compatriot Jonathan Milan in the gold medal race, Ganna clocked 3:59.636 to beat his opponent by more than four seconds and win his fifth world title in the event.

Great Britain's Daniel Bigham - who held the previous hour record before it was broken by Ganna - took on Ivo Manuel Alves Oliveira for bronze, but he came up short with a time of 4:09.956 as the Portuguese clinched the final podium spot with 4:08.738.

There was also a world title for the home crowd to cheer on Friday, as France's Mathilde Gros let emotion take over after beating Germany's Lea Friedrich for gold in the women's sprint - Emma Hinze of Germany pipped Dutch rider Laurine van Riessen to bronze.

GB did not manage to add any medals to their haul on day three, with Will Perrett placing fifth in the men's points race, and Sophie Lewis ended up in 16th in the women's omnium, which was won by the USA's Jennifer Valente. body check tags ::
