Raymond van Barneveld is out of the European Championship after suffering a first-round defeat to Jelle Klaasen.

Jelle Klaasen has recorded a 6-4 victory over Raymond van Barneveld in the first round of the European Championship.

Van Barneveld had been hoping for a morale-boosting win after dropping outside the world's top 16, but he was second best in the all-Dutch affair as Klaasen hit four maximums on the way to victory.

World number one and defending champion Michael van Gerwen found himself 2-0 down against Dutch compatriot Jeffrey de Zwann before fighting back to see off the 19-year-old by a 6-3 scoreline.

Gary Anderson had a comfortable passage through to the last 16 after beating Brendan Dolan 6-3, while Phil Taylor reeled off six successive legs to register a 6-1 win against Vincent van der Voort.

Adrian Lewis and Dave Chisnall both emerged from last-leg deciders against Benito van de Pas and Mensur Suljovic respectively, while James Wade impressed on his doubles in a 6-3 triumph over Terry Jenkins.

In the final game of the day, Kim Huybrechts delighted the Belgian crowd with a 6-3 victory against Mervyn King.
