Sevilla vs. Arsenal: Head-to-head record and past meetings

Ahead of Arsenal's Champions League clash with Sevilla, Sports Mole looks at the head-to-head record and previous meetings between the two clubs.

Arsenal will be looking to get their Champions League group-stage campaign back on track on Tuesday night as they face Sevilla in Spain.

The Gunners, appearing in the tournament for the first time since 2016-17, got off to a perfect start with a 4-0 home hammering of PSV Eindhoven, only to lose 2-1 at Lens in their last outing.

Tuesday's match comes against a Sevilla side under new management following the sacking of Europa League-winning boss Jose Luis Mendilibar, with Diego Alonso the new man in charge for this contest.

Here, Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at the head-to-head record and previous meetings between the two sides.

Head-to-head record

Previous meetings: 2
Sevilla wins: 1
Draws: 0
Arsenal wins: 1

While they have been regular opponents in pre-season tournaments down the years, the only previous competitive meetings between these two sides came in the 2007-08 Champions League group stage.

The home side won on both of those occasions, the first of which saw Arsenal cruise to a comfortable 3-0 triumph at the Emirates Stadium courtesy of goals from Cesc Fabregas, Robin van Persie and Eduardo.

Eduardo also gave the Gunners the lead in the reverse meeting in Seville two months later, but this time Arsene Wenger's side could not kick on against their Spanish opponents, who had seen their manager Juande Ramos resign and take over at Arsenal's North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur between their two meetings.

Manolo Jimenez was the man in the home dugout for the November clash in southern Spain, and he watched his side overcome Eduardo's early opener to run out 3-1 winners, with Seydou Keita, Luis Fabiano and former Spurs man Frederic Kanoute getting on the scoresheet.

That win sealed Sevilla's place in the knockout stages as Group H winners, but Arsenal also qualified as runners-up, two points behind Sevilla.

Tuesday's game will be Sevilla's 27th against English opposition, and they have won 10, drawn eight and lost eight so far - including defeat on penalties to Manchester City in the UEFA Super Cup already this season.

Only two of those wins have come in their last nine meetings with Premier League teams, while at home they have won five, drawn two and lost three of their previous such games.

Arsenal's record against Spanish clubs is not particularly encouraging, with the Gunners having lost 16 and won 12 of their 37 such matches.

Even more worrying is their record in Spain; they have only won three of their 17 away games against Spanish sides, losing 11 of those including five of their last six.

Previous meetings

Nov 27, 2007: Sevilla 3-1 Arsenal (Champions League group stage)
Sep 19, 2007: Arsenal 3-0 Sevilla (Champions League group stage)
