Mark Hughes: 'Jack Wilshere should have been sent off alongside Jack Stephens'

Mark Hughes believes Jack Wilshere should have been sent off as well as Jack Stephens in Southampton's 3-2 Premier League defeat at Arsenal on Sunday.

Mark Hughes has claimed that Jack Wilshere should have been sent off in Southampton's 3-2 defeat at Arsenal on Sunday.

Saints defender Jack Stephens had his shirt ripped off by Wilshere as the pair tussled in the latter stages of the Premier League match at the Emirates Stadium.

Stephens threw the Gunners midfielder to the ground and referee Andre Marriner showed the Southampton man a straight red card, while booking Wilshere.

"I've got to be a little bit careful in terms of referees, it's not an easy role clearly," Hughes told Sky Sports News. "Clearly [Stephens] has reacted to Wilshere clearly pulling him back, so he's reacted just to get rid of him really.

"I was a little bit disappointed the referee didn't see Wilshere, I think he made a definite movement with his knee, when he bounced up to remonstrate with [Stephens], If the referee had seen that I think he would have sent him off... I think both of them should have gone."

Southampton, who remain in the bottom three of the table and three points adrift of safety following the loss, host Chelsea on Saturday.
