Interim England manager Gareth Southgate recalls Harry Kane and Jack Wilshere to his squad for the matches against Scotland and Spain.

Interim England manager Gareth Southgate has recalled Harry Kane and Jack Wilshere to his squad for the upcoming matches against Scotland and Spain.

Kane missed out on the previous squad through injury, but made a goalscoring return from his seven-week absence during Tottenham Hotspur's 1-1 draw with Arsenal in the North London derby this afternoon.

Wilshere, meanwhile, recently completed 90 minutes in the Premier League for the first time since 2014, and the Bournemouth loanee is rewarded with a place in the 25-man squad for the international double-header.

Tom Heaton, Ryan Bertrand, Nathaniel Clyne, Phil Jagielka, Danny Drinkwater, Adam Lallana and Raheem Sterling all also return having missed the World Cup qualifiers against Malta and Slovenia through injury.

Uncapped Michael Keane retains his place in the squad, meanwhile, while the likes of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Kieran Gibbs and Michail Antonio miss out.

Tottenham's Dele Alli is sidelined through injury, as is Manchester United defender Chris Smalling.

"Over the last few weeks we've been looking at as many games as possible and keeping track of all of the players. There were some players that weren't available to us last time with injury who are in good form that make the frame – the likes of Nathaniel Clyne, Adam Lallana and Raheem Sterling. It's good to be able to welcome them back," Southgate told the FA's official website.

"Similarly Harry Kane. We had some good discussions with a lot of the clubs over the past few weeks, and Tottenham have been very helpful in terms of Harry's availability. I'm grateful to Mauricio [Pochettino] for that.

"Of course, Jack Wilshere is a player that we feel has a lot of class and is now starting to get more 90 minutes under his belt. It's good to bring him back into the squad."

England will face Scotland in a World Cup qualifier at Wembley on Friday before hosting Spain in a friendly for their final match of 2016.

The games are scheduled to be Southgate's last two in interim charge of the team, with the FA expected to appoint a permanent successor before their next scheduled match against Germany in March.

England squad to face Scotland and Spain:

Goalkeepers: Fraser Forster (Southampton), Joe Hart (Torino, loan from Manchester City), Tom Heaton (Burnley)

Defenders: Ryan Bertrand (Southampton), Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Nathaniel Clyne (Liverpool), Phil Jagielka (Everton), Michael Keane (Burnley), Danny Rose (Tottenham Hotspur), John Stones (Manchester City), Kyle Walker (Tottenham Hotspur)

Midfielders: Eric Dier (Tottenham Hotspur), Danny Drinkwater (Leicester City), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), Jack Wilshere (AFC Bournemouth, loan from Arsenal), Adam Lallana (Liverpool), Jesse Lingard (Manchester United), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United), Raheem Sterling (Manchester City), Andros Townsend (Crystal Palace)

Forwards: Theo Walcott (Arsenal), Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur), Marcus Rashford (Manchester United), Daniel Sturridge (Liverpool), Jamie Vardy (Leicester City)
