Bolton manager Phil Parkinson expects more from hat-trick hero Josh Magennis.

The Northern Ireland striker netted his first treble in two years to help Wanderers to a 5-2 victory against League One Walsall in the FA Cup third round.

But his manager feels the 28-year-old could offer more for the Championship strugglers.

"Josh has found himself out of the team recently and those goals will do him the world of good," said Parkinson.

"But I think he can work harder for the team and do more.

"However, strikers want to score and if you put the ball in the right areas, Josh is a good finisher and he showed that."

Walsall had led 1-0 at the interval thanks to Andy Cook's 19th-minute header but Bolton turned the tie on its head with three goals in six minutes.

Clayton Donaldson, one of two half-time substitutes, equalised in the 58th minute before Magennis scored his first and Jon Guthrie put through his own goal.

A Mark Beevers own goal made it 3-2 but Magennis struck twice in the last 10 minutes to seal progression to the fourth round.

Bolton were hammered 6-0 at Hull on New Year's Day, with Parkinson taking flak for a half-time change with the score only 1-0.

But this time his introduction of Donaldson and Will Buckley at the break perfectly.

Parkinson said: "I'm pleased with how the substitutions worked out. Clayton came in and changed the game.

"This win is a huge boost for us, especially being 1-0 down at half-time.

"I thought some of our approach play was decent in the first half but we didn't pull the trigger when we got in and around the box.

"We conceded a bad goal and we had to show character to keep playing.

"We did that and after the defeat at Hull and the negativity flying round the club in the last few days, it was important we got the win.

"Financially, it's a big boost and let's hope we get a good draw to give everyone a real lift."

Asked who he fancied in the fourth round Parkinson said: "The biggest money-spinning tie we can possibly get."

Walsall boss Dean Keates, whose side are without a win in six league and cup games, was frustrated with his side's second-half showing.

"We spoke about starting the second half brightly, as we did the first," he said.

"But Bolton have a corner, we don't get into our slots quickly enough and it becomes too easy.

"We got shellshocked again and it needs to be addressed. We spoke about it through the week and we need to regroup into our shape a lot quicker.

"We were accountable for the first three goals but the fourth one should have been our foul for us on the edge of their box.

"The referee played an advantage even though there were five players and the goalkeeper blocking the goal for our shot.

"They go up the pitch, get a free-kick, the ball is rolling but he lets them play on even though he is a yard away."
