Emre Can has signed a contract extension at Borussia Dortmund, with the experienced midfielder now committed to the German giants until the summer of 2026.

There has been speculation surrounding the 29-year-old's future during the current window, with a number of clubs believed to be keeping a close eye on his situation.

However, it has now been announced that Can has extended his contract until June 2026, with the Germany international revealing that he feels "very comfortable" at the club.

"I feel very comfortable here in Dortmund. In the past few months, I have definitely arrived and shown what I expect of myself and what the fans here expect of me," Can told Dortmund's official website.

"Dortmund and I are a good fit for each other. That's why I still want to play here for several more years.

"I always expect a lot from myself and set the bar very high. I must work well in pre-season and it must be my benchmark to play like I did in the second half of the season or even better. I can always do better. I hope that I'll be able to show that in the future."

Can arrived at Dortmund from Juventus in 2020, initially on loan, and he has represented the club on 121 occasions, scoring 12 goals and registering eight assists in the process.

Last season, the German scored three goals and registered one assist in 38 appearances for BVB, including 27 outings in the Bundesliga, with the Black and Yellows falling just short of Bayern Munich for the title.

Can is believed to be under consideration for the captaincy at Dortmund in the new season, with Marco Reus stepping down from the role.

"I wouldn't be disappointed if I didn't become captain, and I'd be happy if I did," Can said when asked about the captaincy situation. "Either way, I will try to lead the way. My job is to help the team."

BVB sporting director Sebastian Kehl also opened up on the importance of his side keeping hold of the German.

"Last season, Emre developed into the leading player that we always saw in him. We value his hunger, his physicality, his absolute desire to win every game and that's not only the case at Borussia Dortmund but in the national team too," he said.

"Emre is a strong, mature character and possesses a wealth of international experience. He will help us to further develop and stabilise this team. We're really happy to continue our joint path with Emre."

Dortmund have made two signings during this summer's transfer window, bringing in Felix Nmecha from Wolfsburg and Ramy Bensebaini on a free transfer from Borussia Monchengladbach. body check tags ::
