Chelsea hammered Schalke 04 5-0 at the Veltins Arena this evening to secure their place in the knockout stages of the Champions League as Group G winners.

John Terry gave the visitors an early lead and Willian added a second before Jan Kirchhoff scored an own goal just before half time.

Didier Drogba and Ramires then capped off the scoring with quickfire goals in the final 15 minutes as Chelsea cruised to victory.

Here, Sports Mole takes a look at who stood out on a memorable night in Gelsenkirchen.

SCHALKE

Goal

Ralf Fahrmann: Could have done better with the opening goal and was completely at fault for the second in a poor first half. Did make a couple of decent saves after the break, though, including one to deny Hazard late on. (4/10)

Defence

Atsuto Uchida: One of his side's better performers on the night. Always a willing runner forward, although he did sometimes get caught out at the back. (6/10)

Felipe Santana: Made more than one defensive error and was given the runaround by Costa all night. Did recover well on a couple of occasions, but those were problems of his own making. (4/10)

Roman Neustadter: Also struggled to deal with Chelsea's potent attacking force. Was a little more steady than his defensive partner, but still not exactly a rock at the back. (5/10)

Benedikt Howedes: Came up against an in-form Willian and could not deal with the Brazilian at times. Was also nowhere to be seen as Ramires nodded in Chelsea's fifth. (5/10)

Midfield

Marco Hoger: Had some bright pieces of play, but they were few and far between. Also made a couple of errors and almost gifted Costa a goal with a poor back-pass. (5/10)

Jan Kirchhoff: Hauled off at the break following a dreadful first half, which culminated in him nodding the ball into his own net. (3/10)

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting: Came closest for Schalke with a deflected effort that looped onto the crossbar, but offered very little after that. (5/10)

Kevin-Prince Boateng: Was anonymous for long periods as Chelsea controlled possession. Didn't create anything going forward and was taken off shortly after the hour mark. (5/10)

Dennis Aogo: Had a couple of chances to swing the ball into the box, but his delivery was poor. Failed to help out defensively and didn't have an impact going forward either. (4/10)

Attack

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar: Starved of service up front and got no joy whatsoever up against Chelsea's defence. Will not have had many quieter nights in his career. (5/10)

Substitutes

Christian Clemens: Offered a little more of an attacking threat having come on at the break. Had a few shots but failed to ever trouble Courtois. (6/10)

Max Meyer: Came on just after the hour mark but couldn't get any joy against such a dominant Chelsea side. (6/10)

CHELSEA

Goal

Thibaut Courtois: Was a spectator for much of the night. Was left helpless when the ball struck his crossbar, but all other tests were routine for the Belgian. (7/10)

Defence

Branislav Ivanovic: Came close with a thunderous volley in the second half and also snatched at a decent chance in the first. Another good performance on the flank, though. (7/10)

Gary Cahill: Almost deflected Choupo-Moting's effort over Courtois but was lucky to see it bounce back off the bar. Other than that, kept Huntelaar quiet and had very little to do. (7/10)

John Terry: Got things going with the opening goal inside two minutes, rising to nod home from a corner. Was never troubled at the back as he captained his side to an impressive victory. (8/10)

Cesar Azpilicueta: Solid performance on the left flank, although others caught the eye a lot more tonight. Carried out his duties expertly. (7/10)

Midfield

Nemanja Matic: Another masterful display in midfield, breaking up attacks and never giving Schalke a moment of breathing space in possession. (8/10)

Cesc Fabregas: Majestic. Pulled the strings from midfield, releasing Costa and co with lovely passes over the top time and time again. Picked up yet another assist too. (9/10)

Willian: Superb performance from the Brazilian, who got his side's second goal and led a number of counter-attacks as well. Always looked a danger and Schalke struggled to deal with him throughout. (9/10)

Oscar: Almost got his name on the scoresheet with a volley just before the third goal. Was not quite as effective as some of those around him, but still an important cog in the Chelsea machine tonight. (7/10)

Eden Hazard: Always looking to take his man on and, more often than not, he succeeded. Another fine performance from the Belgian, who is in scintillating form this season. (8/10)

Attack

Diego Costa: Never gave the defence a moment of rest. Bullied his markers during his time on the field and was completely dominant up front, relishing the service provided by Fabregas. The only blotch on his copybook tonight was that he didn't score despite a few good chances. (8/10)

Substitutes

Didier Drogba: Replaced Costa with 25 minutes remaining and had time to score himself as well as setting up Ramires for the fifth goal. A very successful cameo. (8/10)

Ramires: Came on for Oscar in the 75th minute and got his name on the scoresheet with a header at the back post. (7/10)

Andre Schurrle: Could not join his fellow subs on the scoresheet but did keep things ticking over in the closing stages. (6/10)
