Paolo Di Canio's first trip to Wembley ended in defeat as his Swindon Town side lost 2-0 to Chesterfield in the final of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy this afternoon.
In an evenly-matched opening 45 minutes, the best chance fell to Swindon midfielder Lee Holmes. However, the former Derby County winger saw his effort palmed away by Chesterfield goalkeeper Tommy Lee.
Having struggled to carve goalscoring opportunities during the first half, League One Chesterfield went on to break the deadlock two minutes after the restart. Alex Mendy failed to find a teammate with a low cross but Swindon defender Oliver Risser managed to turn the ball into the net with his outstretched leg.
Craig Westcarr had two chances to seal the victory for Chesterfield, but on both occasions he was unable to find the target.
Swindon's best chance to force extra time fell to Alessandro Cibocchi. However, the defender's headed effort was tipped over the bar via the fingertips of Lee in the Chesterfield goal.
Having failed to add to the scoreline earlier in the match, Westcarr made sure of the win in injury time when he kept his composure to shoot into the bottom corner of the net from 12 yards out.
