Costa Rica got their World Cup Group D campaign off to a winning start by beating Uruguay 3-1 in Fortaleza.

Edinson Cavani gave Uruguay the lead, but goals from Joel Campbell, Oscar Duarte and Marco Urena earned the Costa Ricans a memorable victory.

URUGUAY

Goal

Fernando Muslera: Cannot be blamed for the goals that his side conceded this evening. Did well to keep out a close-range header from Duarte at the start of the second half. (6/10)

Defence

Maxi Pereira: Committed an awful late challenge on Campbell that earned him a deserved red card. Struggled to get into the match and failed to make his usual positive contribution down the right wing. (4/10)

Diego Lugano: Won the penalty for Uruguay in the first half, but struggled to deal with Campbell's pace all evening. Failed to deal with the aerial threat of his opponents throughout. (5/10)

Diego Godin: Like his centre-back partner Lugano, he struggled to deal with Costa Rica's pace in attack. Defended poorly from set pieces all evening. (5/10)

Martin Caceres: Got forward well in the first half, but his influence faded. Could have done better to prevent Gamboa from setting up Campbell's goal. (6/10)

Midfield

Egidio Arevalo Rios: Beaten in the air by Duarte for Costa Rica's second goal. Allowed the opposition far too much space in the midfield. (6/10)

Walter Gargano: Failed to keep possession of the ball in the second half as his side faded. Booked for a poor challenge on Ruiz. (6/10)

Cristian Rodriguez: One of his side's best players and tried to pull the strings in the attack. Substituted late on. (6/10)

Attack

Christian Stuani Struggled to make a positive impact for his side. Sloppy in possession. (6/10)

Diego Forlan: Almost scored with a deflected strike in the first half. Was taken off on the hour-mark as his influence on the game faded. (6/10)

Edinson Cavani: Scored with a first-half penalty and came close with a powerful header after the break. Was not given enough service from his teammates. (7/10)

Substitutes

Alvaro Gonzalez: Entered on the hour mark in place of Forlan, but could not make an impact. (5/10)

Nicolas Lodeiro: Arrived alongside Gonzalez, but struggled to get into the match. (6/10)

COSTA RICA

Goal

Keylor Navas: Made a stunning save from Forlan in the first half and an equally impressive stop from Cavani after the break. Had no chance of saving Cavani's penalty. (8/10)

Defence

Giancarlo Gonzalez: Almost scored at the end of the first half, but couldn't connect with Ruiz's corner. Was solid throughout and helped keep Uruguay at bay. (7/10)

Michael Umana: Was a rock at the back all evening and distributed the ball well. Aerially dominant and stayed calm throughout. (8/10)

Oscar Duarte: Gave his side the lead with a fine diving header. Was solid at the back and kept his opponents' chances to a minimum. (8/10)

Junior Diaz: Conceded a poor penalty in the first half, but made up for it with an assured display after the break. (7/10)

Cristian Gamboa: Produced a brilliant cross that led to Campbell's goal. Ensured that Uruguay's attack was kept quiet down the right hand side of the pitch. (8/10)

Midfield

Celso Borges: Competed well in the middle of the pitch. Ensured that Uruguay's attacking players had little time on the ball. (7/10)

Christian Bolanos: Steady performance in the heart of the midfield. His free kicks caused Uruguay problems throughout the evening. (7/10)

Yeltsin Tejeda: Battled well but his distribution let him down at times. Replaced by Cubero late on. (6/10)

Attack

Bryan Ruiz: Showed his class with a fine performance in the midfield. Was always a threat from set pieces and set up his country's second goal. (8/10)

Joel Campbell: Constantly threatened the Uruguay defence with well-timed runs down the flanks. Took his goal brilliantly and set up Urena for the third. (9/10)

Substitutes

Jose Cubero: Was introduced for Valverde in the closing stages and helped to control the midfield. (6/10)

Marco Urena: Made an immediate impact off the bench with his side's third goal of the game that sealed the points. (8/10)
