Wayne Rooney pleased with England improvement

England skipper Wayne Rooney believes that his side's performance in the win over Switzerland was the best that they have produced since beating Brazil in February 2013.

England captain Wayne Rooney has expressed his belief that his side played "really well" during their 2-0 victory over Switzerland in Basel on Monday.

The Three Lions opened their Euro 2016 qualifying campaign with a win at St Jakob Park, with Danny Welbeck scoring both goals as England came away from their toughest test of the group with maximum points.

Rooney, who was appointed captain in the wake of Steven Gerrard's international retirement, insists that the result was the most important thing, but believes that the team's performance was the best since a 2-1 win over Brazil in February of last year.

"The result, I thought, was the most important thing. Obviously we wanted to play well and wanted a good performance, but I think it was vital we didn't lose," he told reporters.

"We knew that and I also thought we played really well. We stuck to our game plan, we created chances, maybe could have been a couple of goals up at half time. I think it is probably our best performance since Brazil at home, at Wembley, but we have to keep going, have to keep working.

"We are a young team and there were still some things out there that we could have done better and a few sloppy mistakes at times, but we'll work on that. We're a young team but we're progressing and hopefully we can continue."

England's next outing comes in October when they host minnows San Marino at Wembley.
