Jack Wilshere: 'Danny Welbeck needs to play up front'

Jack Wilshere calls for Danny Welbeck to be given a lengthy run as a centre-forward for England.

England midfielder Jack Wilshere has called for Danny Welbeck to be given an extended run as a centre-forward for the national side after his new Arsenal teammate netted both goals in their 2-0 win over Switzerland on Monday evening.

Welbeck, who signed for the Gunners on transfer deadline day, made the most of Daniel Sturridge's injury by bagging a brace to get Roy Hodgson's side's Euro 2016 qualifying campaign off to a winning start.

"He got the chance to play upfront tonight, and deep down if you ask Danny Welbeck where he wants to play, he'll say he wants to play up front," Wilshere told Sky Sports News.

"If he keeps playing like that, then why [can't he carry on there]. He'll score goals and the last few years, he's been playing on the wing, and I know what he can do up top and he knows what he can do, he's shown that tonight.

"When he gets in front of goal, he can really make the opposition pay. Once he gets in front of goal, he's dangerous."

Welbeck could make his Arsenal debut this weekend when they host Manchester City.
