Rio Ferdinand urges all England fans to "join the debate" after the FA commission proposed the introduction of a new tier for Premier League 'B teams'.

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has called on fans to "join the debate" following the release of the Football Association's report on how to improve the development of English football.

Chairman Greg Dyke has revealed plans to introduce a division for Premier League 'B teams' beneath League Two, which will be subject to promotion and relegation.

The report has also proposed loan partnerships between Premier League, Championship and lower-league teams, as well as a reduction in non-homegrown players in top-flight squads from 17 to 12 over five years.

Ferdinand, who is a member of the commission, tweeted: "Anyone who cares about the game in our country knows something needs to be done about the lack of England players playing regularly in the Premier League. That's why the work of the FA chairman's England commission matters and I was buzzing to be involved.

"We spoke to lots of people from grassroots to the top level of the European game. We don't have to agree on everything, but I urge all England fans to read the report. The debate needs to be had - if you care about English football and its players, join the debate."

The commission has also proposed that no non-EU players should join clubs outside of the Premier League.
