Chris Smalling: 'England weren't clinical enough'

Chris Smalling says that England created the "better of the chances" during their 2-0 defeat to Spain in Alicante.

Chris Smalling has claimed that England "weren't clinical enough" as they slipped to a 2-0 defeat against Spain on Friday evening.

Mario Gaspar and Santi Cazorla both scored in the closing stages to seal the victory for the European champions in Alicante and bring an end to England's 15-game unbeaten run.

However, Smalling has said that the Three Lions created enough opportunities to win the game, and that the final scoreline was an unfair reflection of the evening's action.

"For the first 60 minutes we were quite defensively sound as a team and we knew we would get chances on the counter-attack," Smalling told FATV.

"I think we had the better of the chances. We weren't clinical enough. We had a lot of chances around the edge of the box, but if you don't take your chances against good teams, then you get punished.

"We thought it was heading for a 1-0 game, 2-0 flatters them, but it was a great goal [from Gaspar] – I don't think anyone in the stadium would have expected a finish like that."

England are due to play France on Tuesday evening at Wembley, despite the terror attacks that took place in Paris on Friday.
