Euro 2012: Five players to watch

Sports Mole picks five players that we expect to make a name for themselves during Euro 2012 this summer.

Everybody expects that the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Wesley Sneijder, Xavi and Andres Iniesta will make the headlines during Euro 2012 this summer.

However, one of the biggest excitements for supporters is the unearthing of footballers that had been previously unknown outside of their homeland or the league in which they currently ply their trade.

With that in mind, Sports Mole has picked five players that we feel will make impact on tournament over the coming weeks.

Robert Lewandowski, Poland

The 23-year-old is already a household name in Germany, with his goals over the last two seasons viewed as a major contributing factor to Borussia Dortmund's recent domestic success. The Polish striker has also shown his pedigree at international level, having scored 14 goals for his national side. Most bookmakers have Lewandowski at 22/1 to be the tournament's leading goalscorer - tempting each-way odds if you ask us!

Jordi Alba, Spain

Over the past few years Spain coach Vicente Del Bosque has been hunting for a replacement for left-back Joan Capdevila. The search has now ended in 22-year-old Jordi Alba. Not only can the Valencia man defend, but his pace down the flanks will provide the holders with an extra dimension in attack (as if they need one!) Reports in Spain have claimed that Alba will become a Barcelona player at the conclusion of the competition.

Alan Dzagoev, Russia

Despite being just 21 years old, Dzagoev is seen by many as Russia's main creative force at the tournament. The attacking midfielder has an eye for goal, as Manchester United supporters may well remember having seen the CSKA Moscow man score against them in a Champions League tie back in 2010. Dzagoev is currently the youngest outfield player ever to have represented Russia.

Kevin Strootman, Holland

Strootman is expected to be battling for a place in the Dutch starting lineup with Manchester City's Nigel De Jong. While De Jong possesses the experience, many expect 22-year-old Strootman to be given the nod, having featured in more qualifying matches than his teammate. The combative PSV Eindhoven midfielder is a reported transfer target of Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Olivier Giroud, France

Giroud only became a full international in February of this year when he made a scoring appearance against Germany. Despite his international career only being in its infancy, the 25-year-old has made himself a key part of Laurent Blanc's squad. He also impressed during a warm-up match against Iceland by laying on two goals for his teammates.
