Power escapes ban for Jack challenge

Paul McGinn has also evaded further action but Darnell Johnson faces a suspension.

Kilmarnock midfielder Alan Power will face no further punishment for kicking Rangers rival Ryan Jack in the face.

The Irishman was booked by referee Alan Muir during Saturday's William Hill Scottish Cup stalemate when his studs caught Jack on the cheek as they tangled for a bouncing ball.

But Power is now free to face Celtic on Sunday after Scottish Football Association compliance officer Clare Whyte ruled there was insufficient evidence to charge the Killie midfield linchpin with serious foul play.

St Mirren defender Paul McGinn has also escaped further action after planting a forearm smash on Dundee United's Cammy Smith.

But Hibernian defender Darnell Johnson will now sit out his side's next two matches after failing to overturn a ban for his tackle on Celtic left-back Emilio Izaguirre.

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard – who saw striker Alfredo Morelos pick up a three-match ban last week after losing his latest red card appeal – said he would be "interested to see if there's a citing" when he was questioned about the Power incident after the goalless draw at Rugby Park.

Even though the foul was seen by Muir, under SFA rules Whyte could have issued a notice of complaint to the 31-year-old had she decided the incident was "exceptional in nature".

A panel of three former referees would also have to have given their unanimous agreement that Power deserved to be sent off for Whyte to proceed with a notice of complaint, but it has been decided there was not enough evidence to take the case on.

The same explanation was given for the decision not to charge McGinn.

The Saints full-back rammed an arm into the face of his former Paisley team-mate early in the second half as the Buddies crashed out of the cup to Robbie Neilson's Ladbrokes Championship outfit.

Referee Willie Collum was just yards away from the collision but again only deemed the offence worthy of a yellow card.

Meanwhile, Johnson will now sit out Hibs' Easter Road clash with Hamilton on Saturday plus his side's trip to Dundee a week on Friday.

The on-loan Leicester defender was booked for an over-the-ball challenge on Izaguirre on his debut for the Leith club last Wednesday.

Referee Craig Thomson issued Johnson with a yellow card at the time but after reviewing footage of the incident, Whyte decided the tackle was bad enough to merit further punishment.

A three-person disciplinary panel met at Hampden on Tuesday to consider the notice of complaint and upheld the ban for serious foul play.

Allan McGregor faces a Hampden hearing (Jeff Holmes/PA)

Meanwhile, Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor will have to wait until Wednesday to learn if he has successfully challenged a two-game ban for his challenge on Aberdeen's Lewis Ferguson.

The Scotland number one was supposed to appear in front of a fast-track disciplinary hearing on Tuesday but an SFA spokesperson confirmed the meeting had been put back 24 hours at Rangers' request.

McGregor raced from his line to smother a loose ball in his box during Gers' drama-filled 4-2 Pittodrie win last week but left a straight leg hanging which planted into Ferguson's shin.
