Iran boss Carlos Queiroz calls for VAR clarity

Iran head coach Carlos Queiroz calls on FIFA to offer more clarity surrounding VAR decisions in matches.

Iran head coach Carlos Queiroz has called on FIFA president Gianni Infantino to ensure that there is more clarity surrounding VAR decisions in future matches.

Queiroz was critical of the technology following his side's 1-1 draw with Portugal at the World Cup finals and questioned why it did not flag up an apparent red-card offence by Cristiano Ronaldo.

The former Manchester United assistant boss suggested that everyone in the stadium should know how a VAR decision was reached, similar to the video system in place at rugby matches.

"You stop the game for VAR, there is an elbow. Elbow. Elbow is a red card in the rules, the rules doesn't say if it's Messi or Ronaldo," The Guardian quotes the Iran boss as saying.

"We don't know if it was the referee or the guys upstairs [who decided]. This game belongs to the people not to a couple of guys behind the scenes.

"My suggestion, Mr Infantino, they have to put up their hand and say: 'Sorry, VAR is not working so we have to stop it,' or the communication must be clear like rugby, when everybody knows what is going on."

Iran were eliminated from the World Cup following their draw with Portugal while their opponents progressed to the knockout phase.
