Luis Suarez bites Branislav Ivanovic but remains on the pitch to net an equaliser in the seventh minute of stoppage time, as Liverpool draw 2-2 with Chelsea at Anfield.

Luis Suarez equalised in the seventh minute of stoppage time to earn a controversial 2-2 draw for Liverpool in their Premier League clash with Chelsea.

The Uruguayan is now likely to face a ban, though, after he appeared to bite Branislav Ivanovic's arm earlier in the game.

Referee Kevin Friend did not see the incident, meaning that Suarez faces the threat of retrospective action from the Football Association.

The Blues were just seconds away from securing three vital points in their quest for Champions League qualification, thanks to goals from Oscar and Eden Hazard, which came either side of a Daniel Sturridge strike.

However, Suarez's late intervention means that Rafa Benitez's men are now just one point above fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur, who beat Manchester City 3-1 earlier on Sunday.

Liverpool started the game in the ascendancy, but, after Glenn Johnson had spurned an early one-on-one chance, the visitors opened the scoring in the 26th minute.

Oscar broke free of marker Jamie Carragher at a corner kick and planted a powerful near-post header beyond Pepe Reina.

David Luiz's swerving free kick almost doubled the Blues' advantage moments later, but Reina recovered from an initial fumble to stop the ball crossing his goalline.

Sturridge replaced Philippe Coutinho at half time and the England forward's introduction had the desired effect for Liverpool, who twice went close before eventually levelling the scores.

Within 45 seconds of the restart, Sturridge provided a clever through-ball for Steven Gerrard, whose low shot was blocked by the outstretched foot of Cech.

Sturridge then struck the post with a fierce drive from 25 yards, but he was not to be denied moments later.

Stewart Downing rolled the ball into the path of Suarez, who provided a pinpoint cross that Sturridge slotted home from close range.

However, Liverpool's good work was swiftly undone by another moment of Suarez stupidity.

The Uruguayan's raised arm connected with Juan Mata's inswinging corner and referee Friend was left with no option but to point to the penalty spot.

Hazard sent Reina the wrong way to coolly convert from 12 yards and restore the visitors' advantage.

Seeming frustrated by his previous error, Suarez then produced a moment of pure madness.

He appeared to take exception to Ivanovic's attempt to shield the ball out of play and, having grabbed the Serbian defender, he proceeded to sink teeth into his arm.

Suarez escaped punishment and then went on to rub salt into Chelsea's wounds, as he pounced in stoppage time to head a dramatic leveller from close range.
