Liverpool 'to scout Nico Williams at World Cup'

Liverpool are reportedly preparing to step up their interest in Athletic Bilbao forward Nico Williams.

The Merseyside giants made significant changes to their options in the final third earlier this year, bringing in the likes of Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez.

Sadio Mane, Divock Origi and Takumi Minamino have all headed out in the opposite direction, but Jurgen Klopp was satisfied with his attacking options come the end of the summer transfer window.

However, despite strengthening in other areas of the pitch likely to be a priority, Liverpool continue to be linked with at least one more offensive addition.

That is largely due to the uncertainty surrounding the future of Roberto Firmino, who has just over seven months remaining on his contract at Anfield.

According to Fichajes, Klopp has informed Liverpool's hierarchy that he holds an interest in signing Williams.

The 20-year-old has come through the academy system at Bilbao to establish himself as a first-team regular under Ernesto Valverde.

The winger has contributed three goals and three assists in La Liga, helping Los Leones move into fourth spot in the standings ahead of the break for the World Cup.

Williams has also featured in each of the club's 14 league fixtures, starting 13 of them, and his form for his club has resulted in his emergence on the international scene with Spain.

He is the joint least-experienced outfield player in Luis Enrique's squad for the tournament in Qatar, only making his debut in September's UEFA Nations League fixtures.

In his second outing, Williams supplied the assist for Alvaro Morata to score the only goal of the game in a win away in Portugal, and he has put himself in line for regular minutes when the competition gets underway.

On Thursday, Williams again made an impact from the substitutes' bench, scoring his first international goal as Spain beat Jordan by a 3-1 scoreline.

Although Williams has just over 18 months remaining on his contract at San Mames, fresh terms will inevitably have to be penned in the near future if Bilbao are not to receive widespread interest in his signature.

Any Liverpool scouts in the Middle East will seemingly be in attendance when Spain open their campaign against Costa Rica on Wednesday. body check tags ::
