Kalvin Phillips has suggested that he is open to leaving Manchester City during the January transfer window, with the midfielder admitting that he needs to "make a decision" on his future.

The 27-year-old started England's 3-1 win over Italy at Wembley on Tuesday evening, a match which saw the Three Lions book their spot at next summer's European Championship.

Phillips has struggled for action at Man City this season, though, only featuring on five occasions in all competitions, with his three Premier League appearances coming off the bench.

The midfielder has only featured 26 times for the Citizens since his arrival from Leeds United in the summer of 2022, but he remains firmly in Gareth Southgate's England plans.

There is currently a host of speculation surrounding Phillips's future, with Bayern Munich said to have made contact with the Premier League champions to discuss a potential move.

Newcastle United and West Ham United are also both believed to be keen on a player who allegedly has an asking price of around £45m.

Phillips has admitted that his situation at club level has to change, with the midfielder 'agreeing with Southgate' that he needs to be playing regularly in order to seriously challenge for a starting spot at Euro 2024.

"I know that I need to be playing games and competing every weekend. I'm going to have to make a decision on [my future] over the next months," Phillips told BBC Sport.

"He [Gareth Southgate] just says that for me to keep my spot I have to be playing games. That's what I want to do. I have agreed with Gareth on that.

"I want to play football and want to play as much as possible. Over the last year and a half I haven't been able to do that due to injuries and [other factors]. It's something I am going to have to think about.

"Hopefully my chance does come but if it doesn't then I will have to make other decisions as well."

Phillips starred for Leeds ahead of a switch to Man City, representing the Whites on 234 occasions, scoring 14 goals and registering 13 assists in the process.

A number of clubs are believed to have attempted to sign the Englishman in the summer of 2022, but Man City ultimately won the race for the midfielder.

Phillips appears to have struggled to gain the full trust of Citizens head coach Pep Guardiola during his time at the Etihad Stadium, though, and he was tellingly an unused substitute against Arsenal in the Premier League last time out despite Rodri being suspended. body check tags ::
