Manchester United defender Harry Maguire is out of the Red Devils' squad for Wednesday's Champions League opener with Bayern Munich due to injury.

The Red Devils make their return to the top tier of continental football at the Allianz Arena this week, but Erik ten Hag is dealing with an unenviable list of absentees.

Despite his side's early injury crisis, Maguire remains low down the defensive pecking order under Ten Hag, who stripped him of the captaincy earlier this summer.

The 30-year-old has endured a miserable start to the season for club and country, making just one substitute appearance in the Premier League against Arsenal before the international break.

While donning the England jersey, Maguire started a Euro 2024 qualifying draw with Ukraine, being criticised in his role for Oleksandr Zinchenko's opener before scoring an own goal off the bench in a friendly win over Scotland.

The defender's unfortunate contribution led to a torrent of online abuse - which he has experienced for a number of years - leading to Gareth Southgate launching an impassioned defence of his stalwart.

Maguire was back on the bench for Saturday's 3-1 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion, but the Red Devils have now announced that he will miss the trip to Bavaria due to injury.

Man United did not specify the nature or severity of Maguire's problem, and his absence means that Ten Hag will be without no fewer than 11 players for Wednesday's European showdown with Bayern.

The Red Devils received a triple boost at Carrington earlier on Tuesday, as Mason Mount (thigh) and Raphael Varane (unspecified) were pictured taking part in full training with the rest of the team, while goalkeeper Tom Heaton is back from an ankle issue.

However, neither Varane nor Mount has been passed fit to make the squad for Wednesday's game, while midfield duo Kobbie Mainoo (ankle) and Sofyan Amrabat (back)both trained away from the main group.

In addition, all of Amad Diallo, Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia and Aaron Wan-Bissaka - who was recently ruled out for two months with a hamstring injury - are all in the care of Man United's medical team.

Alongside their nine injured players, Man United are without the services of attacking duo Antony and Jadon Sancho, both of whom are out of the first-team picture due to off-field problems.

Antony was granted leave after being accused of domestic violence by three women, although the Brazilian has strenuously denied the allegations and is spending time away from the competitive spotlight while he contests the trio's claims.

Meanwhile, Sancho has been ostracised from first-team training after alleging that he had been made a "scapegoat" after Ten Hag dropped him from the squad to face Arsenal earlier this month, citing poor showings at Carrington.

However, Sancho denied his manager's claims, and he will allegedly only be integrated back into the group if he issued an apology to Ten Hag.

Given their plethora of absentees, youngsters such as Omari Forson, Dan Gore and Hannibal Mejbri will board the plane to Germany, while veteran defender Jonny Evans is also in the squad.

MAN UNITED SQUAD:

Goalkeepers: Altay Bayindir, Tom Heaton, Andre Onana, Radek Vitek

Defenders: Victor Lindelof, Lisandro Martinez, Sergio Reguilon, Diogo Dalot, Jonny Evans

Midfielders: Bruno Fernandes, Christian Eriksen, Casemiro, Facundo Pellistri, Scott McTominay, Dan Gore, Hannibal

Forwards: Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford, Rasmus Hojlund, Alejandro Garnacho, Omari Forson body check tags ::
