Louis van Gaal: 'Wayne Rooney not guaranteed FA Cup semi-final place'

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal warns Wayne Rooney that he will have to earn his place in the starting lineup for the upcoming FA Cup semi-final against Everton.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has warned captain Wayne Rooney that he is not guaranteed a start in the FA Cup semi-final against former club Everton on Saturday.

The 30-year-old has recently returned from two months out with a knee injury and made his first start since recovering during the 1-0 win over Aston Villa last weekend, being taken off after 67 minutes.

Van Gaal hinted that Rooney would get more game time in Wednesday's Premier League clash against Crystal Palace at Old Trafford, but insists that every player will have to earn the right to start at Wembley.

"It's dependent [on] how he plays, like every player. We have to see how he is playing," he told reporters.

"I think he played very well in the first half [against Villa], I have said that already. In the second half he was tiring but he had already got 60 minutes in his legs.

"He has trained today and he has recovered so we will have to see how he is feeling in the second half against Crystal Palace and still he has to play good."

Rooney has never won the FA Cup and was also left out in the 2009 semi-final against Everton.
