Cristiano Ronaldo marked his second Manchester United debut with two goals, as the Red Devils recorded a 4-1 win over Newcastle United in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

The returning hero scored from close range in the latter stages of the first half before firing through the legs of Newcastle goalkeeper Freddie Woodman to send his side back ahead in the 62nd minute.

A win and two goals, which sent Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side to the top of the Premier League table, represented an excellent homecoming for the Portugal international, who showed that he is still more than capable of finding the back of the net in England's top flight.

Here, Sports Mole takes a look at Ronaldo's performance against the Magpies.

Ronaldo had a half-chance in the early exchanges when Bruno Fernandes chipped a pass into his fellow Portuguese, but the ball just ran away from the 36-year-old inside the Newcastle box.

The attacker had another opportunity in the ninth minute when he met a dropping ball inside the area, but his volley was always moving wide of the post.

Less than two minutes later, Ronaldo excellently worked some space inside the penalty area courtesy of a number of step-overs before firing towards goal, but the ball hit the side netting.

As expected, Ronaldo operated at the tip of the attack, with Jadon Sancho off the left, Mason Greenwood off the right and Fernandes playing in the space behind his countryman.

The former Sporting Lisbon youngster had another shot towards goal blocked in the 23rd minute, with Newcastle goalkeeper Woodman still not having a save to make at that stage.

Ronaldo's movement was opening space for the likes of Fernandes and Sancho, and the latter had a strike deflected just wide of the post in the 32nd minute of the contest at Old Trafford.

Ronaldo looked to have a shooting chance in the 35th minute when Fernandes found him inside the box, but the Portuguese could not escape the attentions of Jamaal Lascelles, who shrugged him off.

The forward then had a shot blocked inside the Newcastle box after attempting to work some space with a couple of step-overs, with the Magpies defending excellently against Solskjaer's side.

Ronaldo came up with the game's opener in the second minute of additional time at the end of the first 45, though, as he tapped in from close range after Newcastle goalkeeper Woodman had spilled a shot from Greenwood, who had unleashed one from distance.

The Portuguese ended the first half having had five shots, while he also boasted a pass success rate of 71% and was heavily involved in the team's play despite operating at the tip of the attack.

Newcastle levelled the scores in the early stages of the second half through Javier Manquillo, and the Magpies continued to cause problems on the counter-attack during a difficult spell for Man United.

Ronaldo came up with his second of the match in the 62nd minute, though, as he expertly collected a pass from Luke Shaw before firing the ball through Woodman's legs to make it 2-1.

Man United made sure of the points when Fernandes scored a stunner from distance in the 80th minute, as another Portuguese star managed to find the back of the net, before Jesse Lingard added a fourth for Solskjaer's side with a fine finish in second-half stoppage time.

Ronaldo ended the 90 minutes with a total of six shots, while he boasted a pass success rate of 87%, completing 39 of his 45 passes during a fine afternoon's work in Manchester. body check tags ::
