Alexis Sanchez's record vs. Liverpool

As Manchester United prepare to welcome Liverpool to Old Trafford, Sports Mole takes a close look at Alexis Sanchez's scoring record against the Reds.

With his Manchester United form being called into question, plenty of focus will be on January signing Alexis Sanchez in this weekend's showdown against Liverpool.

The Chile international arrived at Old Trafford from Arsenal six weeks ago as part of a swap deal involving Henrikh Mkhitaryan, reportedly lured by the offer of more than £350,000 a week in wages.

Sanchez has played a part in just one goal in seven appearances since then, however, and was criticised by some for his performance against Crystal Palace last time out when giving the ball away a massive 34 times.

Boss Jose Mourinho is still expected to start the 29-year-old in Saturday's meeting with arch-rivals Liverpool, despite his questionable early return at United, although the Portuguese may first want to consider taking Sanchez's past record against the Reds into account.

Here, Sports Mole looks at the former Barcelona forward's previous encounters with this weekend's opponents.

In close to four years at Arsenal, Sanchez came up against the Merseyside outfit on seven occasions and ended up on the winning side just once - a 2014-15 Premier League clash at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal won 4-1 that day to tighten their grip on the top four, scoring three of their goals inside eight first-half minutes - the Chilean netting the third of them.

Sanchez's thunderous shot, which Simon Mignolet should perhaps have done better to keep out, was one of only two goals netted by the one-time Udinese man in this fixture.

The other came in his most recent meeting with Liverpool when the teams played out a quite extraordinary 3-3 draw at the Emirates Stadium just before Christmas.

Sanchez headed in Hector Bellerin's cross from close range to spark a remarkable comeback, which saw Arsenal score three goals in just five minutes to recover from two down.

Two-hundred-and-forty minutes had passed between those two Sanchez goals, though he did also accrue a couple of assist during that time in what has largely been a fixture of disappointment.

Now plying his trade for Man United, the Tocopilla-born attacker will be hoping that his fortunes will change for the better, starting with Saturday's much-anticipated showdown at Old Trafford.
