Five of the best consolation goals

Following Olivier Giroud's goal against Bayern Munich, Sports Mole picks out five of the best consolation goals.

Of the 66 goals that Olivier Giroud has scored in an Arsenal shirt, few have been better than the volley that he fired beyond the reach of Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer last night.

However, unfortunately for the Frenchman and the Gunners, it was a goal that merely reduced the arrears in the Allianz Arena to 4-1.

With that in mind, Sports Mole has selected five of the best consolation goals over recent years.

1. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar - (Schalke 04) vs. Real Madrid

As far as volleys go, you will have to go a long way to find one that was better struck than this one by Huntelaar, which crashed into the back of Iker Casillas's net via the underside of the crossbar.

Sadly for the Dutchman, his moment was overshadowed by the fact that visiting Real Madrid had already opened up a 6-0 lead thanks to braces from Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema. Nevertheless, even with players of that calibre on the pitch, Huntelaar could at least boast that he had scored the best goal of the night in Gelsenkirchen.

2. Daniele De Rossi - Manchester United vs. (Roma)

On what was a famous European night for Man United, Roma's Italian midfielder stole a tiny bit of the limelight when his side were trailing 6-0 at Old Trafford.

Francesco Totti's cross from the right flank was so far behind De Rossi inside the penalty area that the logical solution seemed to be to trap the ball and then roll it into the path of an advancing teammate to shoot. De Rossi had other ideas, though, as he somehow managed to wrap his foot around the ball to volley an effort into the bottom corner of a stunned Edwin van der Sar's net.

3. Nicky Maynard - Queens Park Rangers vs. (Bristol City)

Aged 28, the MK Dons are now Maynard's sixth club, yet he was at his clinical best during a four-year stint in the red of the Robins, for whom he found the net almost 50 times in his 130 outings.

One of those came at Loftus Road and at the end of the season was voted the Football League Goal of the Year. With the visitors trailing 2-0 in West London, Maynard juggled the ball twice with his right foot, before he spun and volleyed an acrobatic volley into the net from 16 yards out.

4. Matt Phillips - Crystal Palace vs. (Queens Park Rangers)

Quite frankly the R's put in a dismal display at Selhurst Park, but on a personal level at least, Phillips will be able to look back on a wonder goal.

Having picked up possession just inside the Palace half, the Scottish winger advanced to just beyond the centre circle when he unleashed a dipping effort from a full 40 yards out. Julian Speroni in the home goal had plenty of time to see the shot, but such was the swerve and velocity on the strike, the Argentine had no chance.

5. Orlando da Costa - (Concordia) vs. Pandurii

During the 1997-98 campaign, Real Madrid left-back Roberto Carlos scored a famous goal against Tenerife from what seemed to be an impossible angle. Out on the left byline, he was somehow able to curl his shot past a deceived goalkeeper with the outside of his left foot.

Da Costa may not be a household name like fellow Brazilian Carlos, having spent much of his career in Romania, yet he scored a very similar goal with his side 3-0 down against Pandurii. With the keeper anticipating a cross, the winger was able to find the inside of the far post.
