Manchester United eased to a 3-0 victory over Ipswich Town to earn a spot in the fourth round of the League Cup this evening.

Wayne Rooney broke the deadlock with a goal midway through the first half at Old Trafford, before Andreas Pereira curled in a free kick on his first competitive start for the club on the hour mark.

It was left to Anthony Martial to continue his fine form in stoppage time as Louis van Gaal's side set up a tie with Middlesbrough.

MANCHESTER UNITED

Goal

David de Gea: It was an easy night for the Spaniard, who reacted quickly to balls over the top but was not forced to make a save. (6/10)

Defence

Antonio Valencia: Always eager to provide support for his teammates on the right and his pace caused more than a few problems for the visitors. Still not convincing as a defender. (6/10)

Chris Smalling: It finally looks like he is ready to become the leader of this defence. Calm and composed both on and off the ball before heading off with 20 minutes remaining. (7/10)

Daley Blind: Proved his worth as a central defender once again as he often cut out the longer ball when Ipswich adopted a more direct approach. Created the opening goal with an inch-perfect ball over the visiting defence. (7/10)

Ashley Young: A fine performance from the wide man as Louis van Gaal asked him to play at full-back. Stuck to his defensive duties well and threatened with his runs forward on the wing. (7/10)

Midfield

Bastian Schweinsteiger: A faultless display from the German. Dominated the midfield with his range of passing and he frustrated the visitors by responding well to their pressing game. Impressive defensively, too, as he cut out a number of Ipswich breaks. (8/10)

Ander Herrera: Joined Schweinsteiger in controlling the midfield. As ever, the Spaniard was composed on the ball as he looked for United's attacking players on a frequent basis. Often too quick-minded for the Ipswich midfield. (7/10)

Andreas Pereira: One of the best performers in a comfortable win. Capitalised on his first competitive start for the club by troubling the hosts with his pace and trickery. Doubled United's lead with a stunning free kick on the hour mark. (8/10)

Juan Mata: A typically classy display from the Spaniard. His movement off the ball allowed him to collect the ball in dangerous positions and he always looked capable of slicing open the Ipswich defence. Replaced by Martial with 20 minutes remaining. (8/10)

Marouane Fellaini: Given the responsibility of playing close to Rooney, but he often dropped deeper to get involved in the match. Predictably dominant in the air at both ends of the pitch. (6/10)

Attack

Wayne Rooney: Opened the scoring with a fine piece of control and finish, but he was often on the fringes of the game before coming off in the closing stages. (6/10)

Substitutes

Anthony Martial: His impressive start to life at Old Trafford continues. Played on the shoulder of the last defender with his pace and wrapped up the win with a composed finish in stoppage time. (7/10)

Phil Jones: Given the final 20 minutes on his first appearance of the season. Made a couple of important tackles in a solid return from injury. (6/10)

Memphis Depay: Made an impact as a late substitute by releasing Martial for his side's third goal. (6/10)

Bartosz Bialkowski: Made some impressive saves to stop Ipswich from recording a more emphatic win and was given no chance with any of the goals. (7/10)

Defence

Josh Emmanuel: Coped well when United targeted his wing with the runs of Young and he threatened with a couple of long balls forward when Ipswich looked to hit the hosts on the break. (6/10)

Josh Yorwerth: Arguably Ipswich's best performer. Brave enough to track Rooney when he roamed from a central position and the timing of his tackling was perfect all evening. (7/10)

Piotr Malarczyk: Shrugged off the ball far too easily as Rooney capitalised on his poor positioning to break the deadlock in the first half. Looked hesitant in possession, too. (5/10)

Jonathan Parr: Key to Ipswich's promising spell early in the second half as he provided support on the wing and delivered a number of inviting crosses. (6/10)

Midfield

Giles Coke: Energetic off the ball as he pressed the likes of Schweinsteiger and Herrera, but he was unable to do enough to help Ipswich win the midfield battle. Struggled to make an impact in possession. (5/10)

Kevin Bru: Retained possession impressively throughout the match. Showed a desire to get forward whenever possible, but never abandoned his defensive duties. (6/10)

Jay Tabb: A tireless display from the experienced midfielder. Offered good protection for the visiting defence by getting back on the wing but unable to cause problems at the opposite end of the pitch. (6/10)

Tommy Oar: Created a couple of opportunities with his fine crossing and set pieces, but Ipswich could not capitalise. Unable to get close to the front two when Ipswich did counter. (6/10)

Attack

David McGoldrick: Worked hard without the ball to give his teammates options and caused a couple of problems with clever footwork in the box, despite never really getting a sight of goal. (6/10)

Daryl Murphy: A willing runner into the channels when Ipswich were forced to go more direct, but despite his competitiveness, the Irish forward could not get on the ball regularly. (5/10)

Substitutes

Brett Pitman: Introduced just a few moments after United's second goal, but the striker was unable to get involved in the match as the hosts dominated until the final whistle. (4/10)

Freddie Sears: Appeared set to come on before Pereira curled in a free kick, and he was unable to spark an unlikely comeback. Worked hard to put pressure on the United defence, but he could not make an impact in a 30-minute cameo. (5/10)
