Manchester United must qualify for next season's Champions League if they are to have any hope of tempting David de Gea to sign a new contract, according to a report.

Qualifying for next season's Champions League is reportedly key to Manchester United's hopes of persuading David de Gea to sign a new contract.

De Gea has so far opted against putting pen to paper on a new deal at Old Trafford, supposedly because the club are unwilling to match his wage demands.

United chiefs remain confident that something can be agreed with the Spain international, who is due to become a free agent in 15 months' time, but that all comes down to reaching next season's Champions League.

The 28-year-old dreams of winning that competition more than any other at club level and, according to the Manchester Evening News, if United are not competing in it in 2019-20 then he could push for a move away.

De Gea, into his eighth year as a United player, is rumoured to be back on Real Madrid's list of summer targets.

United are two points adrift of the top four in the Premier League and can also book their place in UEFA's showpiece competition next term by winning it this time around, with Barcelona their quarter-final opponents.
