Former Manchester United forward Dwight Yorke has told Harry Maguire to leave Old Trafford during this summer's transfer window for the sake of his career.

The Red Devils accepted a £30m offer from West Ham United for Maguire last week, but a potential move to the Europa Conference League winners has allegedly broken down.

The 30-year-old now appears likely to remain at Old Trafford despite being the fourth-choice centre-back, with Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof all ahead of him in the pecking order.

Luke Shaw was also used ahead of Maguire in the middle of the Man United defence last season when both Varane and Martinez were on the sidelines with injuries.

Red Devils head coach Erik ten Hag has said on multiple occasions this summer that he wants to keep hold of the former Sheffield United youngster, but Maguire had the captain's armband taken away from him at the start of pre-season, and Yorke has claimed that the defender has been "humiliated by the manager".

"I don't think Harry Maguire will be an option for squad depth now, not when he's been humiliated by the manager who spoke publicly about fighting for his place," Yorke told OLBG.

"It's about being the best in your position at the club, that's what he needs to aim for, his confidence will be low after his captaincy was taken away.

"Imagine seeing Luke Shaw playing in your position and you're still on the bench, imagine what that would do to your confidence. Maguire might see it differently and he's entitled to, but I think him leaving Man United is a no-brainer.

"His respect in the changing room would have diminished, he would have been embarrassed by what's happened in recent weeks.

"If Jonny Evans signs a one-year contract says everything that what Erik ten Hag's intentions are with Maguire."

Martinez was replaced at the interval of Man United's Premier League clash with Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday night due to a minor ankle issue, but it was Lindelof and not Maguire that entered the field.

The 2019 arrival from Leicester City was an unused substitute in the team's first match of the new campaign and is expected to struggle for regular action this term if he stays at Old Trafford.

Aston Villa have also recently been linked with Maguire, with Unai Emery's side said to be looking for a replacement for Tyrone Mings, who suffered a serious knee injury against Newcastle United on Saturday. body check tags ::
